Kubo and the Two Strings is an animated movie from studio LAIKA about a Japanese boy going on a quest to find his dead samurai father’s magical armor. George Takei ably voices the grandfather but I found Matthew McConaughey’s Toy Storyish samurai beetle jarring – too American; Charlize Theron’s voicing of the mother was okay but still a little out of place. The origami creations were the best part of the film. The ending is a little too neat and tidy – but will be satisfying to those who need happy endings. The first part of the closing credits – set to a Beatles tune – is well worth watching.
